What is Global Shading Day?

Global Shading Day is an annual event on March 21, and highlights the benefits of sun protection as a passive cooling solution. This day was conceived by the European Shading organisation (ES-SO) to raise awareness among consumers throughout Europe about living a more comfortable and energy-efficient life. And that is desperately needed when you consider that today one in five homes is equipped with active cooling technology such as an air-conditioning system.

Passive cooling, such as sun protection, is the ideal solution!

How do you keep your home comfortably cool on hot days without buying an energy-consuming air conditioner? Passive cooling, such as blinds, is the ideal solution! Prevention is better than cure. Sun protection works as a large, stylish ‘umbrella’ for your home, so to speak. With sun protection, harmful UV rays are blocked, the heat is kept out, and your home remains pleasantly cool in a natural and sustainable way. By using sun protection instead of active cooling, you also make significant savings on your energy costs. More living comfort for you, good for your wallet and the environment!

The benefits of smart sun protection solutions

  • Money saving: Smart sun protection eliminates the need for active cooling. It reduces your energy consumption and your monthly outgoings. If we all use sun protection in Europe, energy spending will be cut by as much as EUR 285 billion by 2050!
  • Comfort: With the right sun protection, you can enjoy pleasant indoor temperatures all year round, without overheating in the summer months or losing heat in winter.
  • Protection: Smart sun protection protects your interior space from harmful UV rays and blocks prying eyes from looking in, while you continue to enjoy the view.
