Solar shading in winter: save energy and warmth with Harol

Did you know that using solar shading in autumn and winter is just as important as in summer? In this article, you’ll discover how external blinds and roller shutters keep your home warm, healthy and energy-efficient when the days become colder and darker. We explain why these solutions work so well, what the latest trends are, which Harol solutions are suitable, and how weather expert Tatiana Silva experiences smart sun management.

Solar shading: much more than a summer solution

Many people assume that solar shading is only useful in summer, but nothing could be further from the truth. While the hottest days occur in summer, the low winter sun can also cause your living room to overheat.

The benefits of solar shading

The low winter sun can cause a lot of inconvenience: annoying glare on your TV or computer screen, temperature fluctuations at home or overheated spots near the window. The right Harol solutions help you keep these issues under control. External roller blinds, for example, filter harsh light while still allowing you to enjoy natural daylight. They reduce glare and create a pleasant light balance — ideal for working, relaxing or watching TV on dark winter days.

Privacy also becomes more important in winter. Because it gets dark earlier, passers-by can look inside more easily. Outside venetian blinds, roller shutters and screens give you full control over privacy without affecting your comfort.

Why choose Harol?

Harol offers solutions that increase comfort and contribute to insulation and energy savings.
Roller shutters feature insulating slats that help retain heat indoors and reduce energy consumption — while providing extra privacy and improved security.
Screens offer a subtle combination of light control and insulation. The air buffer between the fabric and the window reduces heat loss and supports a more stable indoor climate, even on cold, windy days.
Outside venetian blinds allow you to steer sunlight precisely by tilting the slats however you want — preventing glare and offering additional privacy.
With automation (motors, sensors), your solar shading adjusts automatically to sunlight and temperature, ensuring maximum efficiency throughout the year.

“For me, it’s essential to let daylight in, but unfortunately a lot of sun also enters my apartment, making it uncomfortably warm very quickly.”

Practical tips: how to use your solar shading efficiently in winter

Use daylight moments: open your roller shutters or external blinds during sunny hours to maximise passive heating.
Close at night: shut your roller shutters in the evening to keep warmth inside.
Automate where possible: let light or temperature sensors decide when your shading opens or closes — saving energy and effort.
Maintain regularly: even if it takes little time, regular cleaning extends the life of your sun protection and ensures optimal performance.

Why solar shading is essential even in winter

With the right strategy and the right Harol solutions, you benefit from extra comfort, privacy and energy savings all winter long. Roller shutters, screens and outside venetian blinds help retain heat, reduce your energy costs, increase comfort and provide extra security and privacy. By using daylight intelligently, relying on automation and keeping your system well maintained, you get the most out of your shading — perfectly aligned with Harol’s mission to make sustainable, energy-efficient solutions accessible.

Tatiana Silva: how she uses smart sun management in her apartment

This vision corresponds to how Tatiana Silva manages light and energy in her own apartment. With her interest in climate and wellbeing, she knows how strongly light and temperature influence daily comfort and energy consumption. That’s why she consciously chooses Harol solutions to help her find the right balance: enough daylight, more privacy and a stable indoor temperature without unnecessary energy use.

Tatiana’s tips for comfortable, energy-efficient living

Her main tip? Smartly automating your solar shading as part of your energy management. Think of external blinds that lower automatically when the sun is low, or roller shutters that keep warmth inside during cold nights. This way, you enjoy more comfort, lower costs and a more sustainable home all year round — exactly what both Tatiana and Harol value.

Folding arm awnings

A folding arm awning is the ideal horizontal sun protection, creating a lower indoor temperature and pleasant shade on your terrace.

Screens

Harol has the biggest range of sun protection screens for windows. Choose vertical sun protection and make the energy-efficient choice for your home.

Outside venetian blinds

Outside venetian blinds are the perfect sun protection for your windows. Create shade, privacy and keep the heat outside. Always made-to-measure.

Veranda or conservatory awnings

Veranda sun canopies block the sun coming through your skylight, rooflight or veranda. Also supplied using solar power.

Wind screen

This side screen protects you from sun and wind in the most challenging areas of your terrace.

Pivot arm awnings

A pivot arm awning is the ideal shade provider for windows and balconies. The sunlight is effectively blocked by the screen, with its steep downwards angle.
